T.C. Knapp ElementaryMr. Boggs’ 3rd Grade ClassWeek of January 6th, 2014 • Dear Families, • Congratulations to Jackson Mounts for recently being selected as student of the month! Jackson was chosen for his strong work ethic, willingness to cooperate with others, and for demonstrating positive character traits at T.C. Knapp Elementary. • Sincerely, Mr. Boggs • Reading This week in reading, we will begin a new story entitled, The Harvest Birds. In this folktale, the students will look for a plot that may also teach a lesson, a main character who shows the values of a culture, and information about the customs of a specific culture. • Our comprehension skills and strategies will focus on drawing conclusions and the difference between literal and nonliteral meanings. Both of these skills are review so the students should already have a good grasp on each concept. • Lastly, we will stress the phonetic skills of silent letters (knand wr). Many of the spelling words this week will contain the combinations of these silent letters. • SpellingA spelling list for Lesson 8 will be sent home on Monday. Please practice these words with your child throughout the week . The students will have their test over Lesson 8 on Friday, January 10th. This will be your child’s final spelling grade before the end of the 2nd Nine Weeks. • Math: This week in math, the students will use bar models to solve one and two-step multiplication and division problems. They will also begin to recognize number relationships. A reminder that using bar models is just an additional strategy students can use to solve word problems. It is a difficult strategy to understand at first, but provides students will a visual understanding of mathematical problems they are attempting to solve. Although we use bar models throughout the week both within class activities and through reinforcement of homework, the students WILL NOT have a test over this strategy. Please continue to practice facts with your child. We will use multiplication and division throughout the remainder of the school year. We already have 3 students who have completely mastered all of their multiplication facts! Congrats, students! • Social Studies: The students Chapter 8 test over Government was pushed back until this week. I did not feel the students were ready for their assessment before Christmas break. The students will again be asked to continue to study their Chapter 8 study guide throughout the week. Extras will be sent home on Tuesday. The students will have their Chapter 8 assessment on Friday, January 10th.
