Part 1: Location of fossils in NC • Objective: You are going to be working in groups to find the locations of fossils that have been found throughout NC (5.01, 5.05) • Materials: • Map of NC • Stickers • Pen • Fossil information sheets • Procedure: Using the fossil information sheets locate each of the counties that the fossils were found. Place an X on the county with the fossil name and age (just the number for the age will be enough).

Part 1: Location of fossils in NC • Questions: Using the information on the map, the fossil information sheets, and your knowledge of fossils, answer the following questions: • What types of fossils are the majority of fossils found in NC? Why do you think this is so? • What part of NC are most of the fossils found? Why would this be the case? • Why do you think we do not find fossils in the mountains of NC? • What is similar about these counties that helps fossil hunters find fossils at/near the surface? Explain.

Part 2: Age of fossils found in NC • Objective: Using the fossils you located in part 1, determine what period/era in Earth’s history these fossils were formed (5.01). • Materials: • Map of NC with stickers • Pen • Geologic time scale • Procedures: Use the geologic time scale and your map of NC (which you already placed the X). Determine from the age you wrote near the X, what period and era the fossil was formed. Write this in the space provided on the data page along with the fossil name and age.

Part 2: Age of fossils found in NC • Questions: Using the information on the map, the geologic time scale, and your knowledge, answer the following questions: • What are the period and era that a majority of NC’s fossils were formed? • Based on what you have learned about this period and era, what can you tell me about the environment and condition in NC at that time? • How is NC similar and how is it different from what it was back when these fossils formed. • What did you learn about our state (as far as fossils and geologic time) that you did not know before? Explain.
