Introduction • Why is IPTV? • Network infrastructure today has become highly evolved and is required to support converged IP applications such as video, voice and data (triple play) • IPTV will provide better quality of service than Internet streaming video • IPTV has the potential to offer an interactive, customized experience • The telco operators’ weapon in the fight for market share
Architecture • Content sources • IPTV service nodes • Wide area distribution network • Subscriber
Type of Service • Broadcast/Multicast • Regularly scheduled programs sent to a large number of subscribers • Subscribers tune to a specific channel • Subscribers cannot influence the playback
Type of Service • Video-on-Demand (VoD) • Stored videos are sent to subscribers on request • Subscribers receive their own copy of the video • Subscribers can control playback – VCR operation
Underlying Protocols • IGMP – Internet Group Management Protocol • Multicast specification • PIM (Protocol-Independent Multicast)
Underlying Protocols • RTSP – Real Time Streaming Protocol • Client-server application layer protocol • For user to control display • RTSP is out-of-band protocol (similar to FTP)
Conclusion • Advantages • Triple Play • Interactivity • VoD • Challenges • High bandwidth requirement • Being compared to traditional TV – the gold standard • Channel change time • Still in the early stage, but an important factor in the video marketplace
