Loyalty to Political Parties • Most vote for their party’s candidate • Strong vs. Weak Party Voters • Strong party voters tend to to vote a straight-party ticket - only select candidates from their party • Weak party voters are more likely to switch their votes to the rival party occasionally • Independent Voters – don’t think of themselves as Reps. Or Dems. • This group is growing
Issues in Election Campaigns • Many voters not well informed on issues • Become more informed through • Television • Better educated than in the past • Issues influence people’s lives more directly now
The Candidates Image • Way voters perceive issues is just as important as the issues themselves • Candidates try to present themselves as someone the public can trust • Many voters select candidates on image & pres. Qualities they appear to have alone
