Academic Writing & Research • Not required but an excellent idea for all • Free to you, only this time • In future, students will have to pay for this subject • How you can use the subject • What you need to learn • Templates • Extension of time on final paper in 910 – June 15 is absolute deadline
Format for all stories from now • 12 pt Calibri or Arial font • Single space; double space between paragraphs • No indenting for paragraphs • No bold letters • Title same size as text • Full name at top of paper • Make sure computer set left to right, not right to left
Field Trip Story #1 • What were your experiences? • Did you have trouble with interviews? • Did you do any research before starting or before interviewing?
Field Trip Story #2 Requirements: • 400 words maximum • Feature story • Story that couldn’t be done from home/office • Includes interviews • Sources of information provided are identified
Field Trip Story #2 Feature Story • What’s the difference between Story 1 and Story 2? • Stories should be related but Story 2 can take off in other direction • Remember that Field Trip Story 3 will be online version of Story 1 • Field Trip Story 4 will be online version of Story 2
Writing Exercise #3 • Assignment is oneparagraph • Paragraph is opening of a column on any subject – something you feel strongly about • You still need an interesting opening that makes it clear what the column will be about • Paragraph is 3-5 sentences maximum • Now you can use “I” if you want • Writing has to be lively; short sentences; no passive constructions
How do you start? • Don’t start writing too fast – THINK! • Decide what direction you will take • Many possibilities • Your paragraph has to be constructed like a paragraph: topic sentence and supporting sentences • The paragraph should have 3-5 sentences
TEAMS for presentation 1 • 3 teams • Each team to take one international story – email your choice to avoid duplication • Teams will plan local story to sheds light on international story • Teams will prepare 20 min. presentations • Timings must be observed – will cut off at 20 min. • Presentations to be delivered Wednesday, April 18
Session 8 next week – NO CLASS in 911 • Field Trip Story 1 will be returned by end of Saturday, March 24 • Revision due by email March 28 before 6 pm • No class March 28 but work on team presentations • See you Monday, April 2
