Sibling Rivalrydoes sibling rivalry occur from nature or nurture? BY: Tiara Bouldrick-Turnage
What is Sibling Rivalry • Sibling Rivalry is the jealousy, competition and fighting between siblings • Sibling Rivalry can come from two things, nature or nurture • The Nature theory states that people behave the way they do according to genetic predispositions or even animal instincts • The Nurture Theory states that people think and act in certain ways because they are taught to do so
Birth Order • The birth order of children strongly influences sibling relationships • Where a child places in the birth order can have an effect on how they see themselves.
Gender • Gender has an influence on sibling rivalry • If both children are of the same sex then the likelihood of problems will increase • Brothers and sisters are often called life's most influential and longest relationship. • Most brothers and sisters experience some feelings of jealousy and competition. • If there is an older brother and a younger sister the older brother usually has an protective instinct toward his little sister. Scientist don’t know why this is.
Competition • In science we learn about competition, survival of the fittest • In sibling rivalry competition is between the scarce resource of time, attention, love, and approval of parents • The problem is basically one of competition for limited or scarce resources
Nurture • The theory of nurture in sibling rivalry comes in when it has to do with parents and the environment. • Sibling rivalry is unavoidable, but can be lessened by treating children equally and not jumping to conclusions • When parents try to treat each child as an individual and avoid making sibling comparisons, they reduce sibling rivalry.
Family Dynamics • Family dynamics play a key role in sibling rivalry. • Sibling relationships are embedded by parenting behaviors. • Children may not know positive ways to get attention so they pick fights instead. • Parents should involve children in setting ground rules, with clear and consistent consequences for breaking rules. • It is helpful when children work out their conflicts for themselves with a mediator present
Outlook on life • How children interpret the way their parents and siblings see them effects what they think about themselves • Siblings learn valuable lessons about reliance in human relationships. • The effects of sibling relationships influence the acquisitions of pro-social skills such as sharing and getting along with one another. • The interest and skills children develop in their sibling relationships are often repeated later on in choosing occupation, mate, or deciding how many children to have
Nature or Nurture • Sibling rivalry cannot be prevented, because it is natural. • Nature is from the time you are born until the time you die while nurture is the way the environment affects your life. • Nature include birth order, gender, and competition. • I have concluded from my research that the cause of sibling rivalry is more from nature than nurture
