MAN LAN Exchange Point • MAN LAN (the Manhattan Landing) is a high performance exchange point to facilitate peering between US and International Research and Education Networks • MAN LAN was formed as a partnership with NYSERnet, the New York State Education & Research Network • Located in 32 Avenue of the Americas in New York City • Collocated in the NYSERnet facility adjacent to the fiber meet me room – cross-connects simple to facilitate • Fiber cross-connect to Abilene router in same building • Other carriers have presence in 32 AoA • NYSERnet has some collocation space available • Has been in operation since summer of 2003

  3. MAN LAN Services • MAN LAN is primarily a layer2 exchange point • Cisco 6509 with 1 and 10 GigE interfaces • Short, medium, and long haul optics • Recently underwent a major upgrade to insure reliability • Redundant supervisor modules (latest versions) • Redundant interfaces • Point to point VLANS between peers

  4. MAN LAN Connectors • MAN LAN Connectors • 10 GigE • SINET • Abilene • NYSERnet (near future, current 1 GigE) • ESnet (near future) • 1 GigE • CA*net (2 x 1 GigE) • GEANT (2 x 1 GigE) • HEANET • Qatar

  5. MAN LAN Experimental Facility • Addition of layer1 experimental facility in January of 2004 • Cisco 15454 • 4 x 1 GigE • 2 x OC-48 • 3 x OC-102 • Participation in the GLIF, the Global Lambda Integrated Facility

  6. MAN LAN Experimental Facility • Current Connections • OC-192 • CA*net • Surfnet • Abilene • 1 GigE • MAN LAN Switch (4 x 1 GigE) • TYCO/IEEAF OC-192 supports Surfnet/Abilene connectivity through Cisco 15454s • OC-48 devoted to Surfnet/Abilene peering (through OC-192 interface on Abilene router) • Remainder is devoted to experimentation – example was recent LA to CERN lightpath demonstration
