Caroline Chisholm College Physics Light has wave and particle characteristics DeBroglie proposed that electrons should have a wave-like nature He used E=mc2 and E=hf to give: mc2 = hf i.e. mv2 = hf i.e. (mv)v = hf i.e. pv = hf i.e. v = hf/p v = fl l = v/f = hf/pf = h/p = h/mv etc... 6th energy level = 6 wavelengths He imagined circular standing waves when 5th energy level = 5 wavelengths whole multiples of wavelengths = circumference and applied this to electrons in orbit around the nucleus Bohr: Electrons orbit in circular motion, stable, non-radiating orbits. Atoms emit and absorb radiation in quantised amounts, corresponding to energy levels. 4th energy level = 4 wavelengths 3rd energy level = 3 wavelengths 2nd energy level = 2 wavelengths de Broglie’s standing wave pattern of vibration with whole number of wavelengths is necessary for stability so that an orbit will not destructively interfere with itself 1st energy level = 1 wavelength An electron can * absorb a quantum of energy higher standing wave energy An electron can * release a quantum of energy lower standing wave energy
