Questions in advance • What types of stress prevention programs are already established to support First Responders? • As FR normally show different stress coping strategies, will it be possible to improve their stressmanagement behavior by virtual reality trainings? • Could we further avoid the appearance of post traumatic stressdisorders by using a special form of heartrate training? Aims 2 • Blind dates on body-functions and transformation to standardized data sets. • Effect of stress on body-functions and transformation to standardized data-sets. • Effect of threatening situations and influence on the disposing capacity and transformation to standardized data sets. Traumatic Stress • A psychic trauma tends to be related to the experience of vital threats and the impression of inability to cope. • This experience is related to a feeling of being helpless and without any protection and will change the understanding of the inner self and the world around. Virtual Reality Training • A training using head-mounted displays, spacemouse, trackingsystems to simulate a state of being quite near to the reality. • To reach a state of immersion it is necessery provide for a certain situation identical smells and noises. • We will try to expose the First Responder to virutal situations were they are forced to act as usual gaining the feeling of real time and real situation. Biofeedback system • Biofeedback will improve the ability of FR to cope with traumatic stress by getting information about the special reaction of their heartfrequence, breathfrequence, handtemperature and tension of muscles (trapezius). • A special training of breathing (Heartrate-Training) in advance will help the F.R. to cope with the virtual reality. Setting of Research • 120 first responders – police, army, paramedics and firefighters • Divided in three different groups – well coper, bad coper and controlgroup after psychological testing • Information of all the F.R. about the time and the data of the research. Setting of Research 2 • Three heartratetrainings with Biofeedback information. • Information about virtual reality. • Three hours of training within one week using virtual reality of catastrophic terrorism combined with biofeedback information. • Psychological testing and diagnostics of stressparameters on the Biofeedback system.
