Rarely make any comments on the top 2 layers of the pyramid. Simply tell students that you refuse to grade it until they have refined the paper. Grammar Spelling Citations Punctuation Word Choice, Sentences, & Tone Introduction & Conclusion-reflect body of paper, hook reader, give sense of closure Development--Claims supported by evidence, no gaps, & essay fulfills the purpose of the assignment Organization--Paragraphs connect to thesis and to each other & address only one idea Focus-- Clear thesis statement, stays on topic Appropriateness Writing responds directly to the assignment Stays within parameters/scope of the assignment • FHSS Writing Lab 1049 JFSB • fhss-writinglab@byu.edu / 422-4454
