Lesson 1-4: The Distributive Property Objectives: (Do not write) Use the distributive property to multiply expressions. Students will use properties to collect and simply terms
Like Terms- Have the same variables to same power 2) Collect like terms 5x + 4y + 2x – 3y Simplify all the way! 7x+y Distributive Property a(b + c) = ab + ac or a(b – c) = ab - ac A number next to parenthesis Gets multiplied to all terms inside • Examples • Multiply r(a + b + c) ra + rb + rc
Multiplicative Property of -1: a • -1 = -a Inverse Sum Property: -(a + b) = -a + -b or -a – b A negative in front of parenthesis turns everything inside to its opposite! (Just distributing a -1) Example 3: -(-3x) -1*(-3x) 3x Example 4: -(-3x - 2y + 1) 3x +2y -1
Review Skill:Factoring (monomial):Undoing the distributive propertyMake sure you find The GCF Example 5: 2l + 2w 2(l + w) This is important for much of what we do!! Learn it now!!! 5x is common to all terms (If your good, leave this step out!!) Example 6: 10x3-15x2 + 5x
Marker Board • Simplify (Distribute and CLT) • 4x-15y-(-5x)+3y • 12x-5(3x-6) • 8g-5[-2+6(g +10)]-2(g+4)
