Developing Independent Learners March 2012 Pamela Jones & Kim Lambert Prior Pursglove College
Reasons • We want our students to be equipped to deal with a changing world • We want our staff to have tools to deal with the changing profile of students
7 Habits of Highly Effective Teenagers • Be Proactive • Begin with the end in mind • Put first things first • Think win win • Seek first to understand then to be understood • Synergy • Sharpen the saw
The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teenagers - Tutorials • The principles of the 7 Habits give a structure for individuals to manage their response to this changing world • Language used in 7 Habits is too American and doesn’t always appeal to staff or students. • No link to what is happening in the classroom.
Building Learning Power • Resourcefulness • Reflectiveness • Resilience • Reciprocity
Building Learning Power - Subject Lessons • No link to tutorial. • Same thing is described in at least two different ways
Combining these together • We are developing a common language of learning that all staff are familiar with and students gradually become familiar with • Monthly staff training outlines the theme for that month showing some tutorial exercises but also giving ideas that can be incorporated in the classroom
SeptemberTransition & Induction • Focus on Transition issues raised by research we had undertaken internally • Induction in College systems and expectations
October Be Proactive & Resourceful • Encourage students to ask questions and to make links with other subjects and with previous learning • Encourage students to explore ideas for when they get stuck • Encourage students to look out for materials, resources and forms of support to help them to learn and solve problems
Example • Being proactive is about taking responsibility • Being resourceful is about knowing what to do when you don’t know what to do
NovemberBegin with the end in mind • Exploring options for the future • What they need to do to get where they want to be • Explore ideas for when things get in the way
Example • Beginning with the end in mind means developing a clear picture of where you want to go in life.
Just do it! Would you get married to your partner if when asked to take you as their lawfully wedded husband or wife, they said “I’ll try”? Would you lend £2000 to a business partner who said “I’ll try to pay it back”? In the words of Yoda, the great Jedi master: “Do or do not. There is no try”
DecemberPut first things first – Resilience • Managing distractions • Encouraging perseverance • Noticing, making links and patterns
JanuaryThink win-win • Recognising their responsibility and the part they have to play to ensure success • Working together to achieve success
Example • Many people believe that in order for them to win others have to lose. Exercises are used to demonstrate how to develop the attitude that both sides can win.
Red and BlueThe aim of the game is for each team to end with a positive score
FebruarySeek first to understand then to be understood and elements of Reflectiveness & Reciprocity • Empathy and Listening • Thinking about what a task is really about • Distilling information • Revising
MarchSynergy – Reflectiveness & Reciprocity • Learning with other people • Coaching and collaborating with each other • Imitating other people’s ways of thinking • Thinking about how they learn
AprilSharpen the saw • Staying healthy during exams • Revision programmes that include rest and recreation breaks
Independent Learners • By using a staged approach this allows students to develop the skills and to have the tools to be independent learners and to deal with the issues they will face in the future.
