Catherine Caws Dept. of French ccaws@uvic.ca SSHRC Review Committee Members Meeting June 13th, 2012 University of Victoria About the IDG… “…supporting research in its initial stage…”
Why apply for an IDG (Insight Development Grant)? New scholar • You are not ready for a large scale initiative • You want to test a method or theory by way of a pilot study or a case study • You want to do a critical analysis of existing research before applying for an Insight Grant Regularscholar • You are about to launch a new research initiative that is clearly different from what you have done before (e.g., new method and theory)
Things you should know… IDG • Your application is NOT evaluated by external reviewers • 1 to 2 year grant • $ 7,000 to 75,000 in total • Scoring: • 50 challenge • 20 feasibility • 30 capability IG • You propose external reviewers’ names • More money, longer period • Scoring: • 40 challenge • 20 feasibility • 40 capability
Items to watch for… • Overall presentation • Summary and writing style • Budget appropriateness • Research mobilization • Role of participants • New scholar • Career interruption
My advices • Plan the writing of your application over several weeks (at least) • Create a group to engage in peer evaluation • Have your proposal read by someone who is in a slightly different field as well as by someone in your field • Keep applying until you receive your first grant
