Background: • Diego Velasquez was born on June 6, 1599 in Seville, Spain. • A Spanish painter in the court of King Philip IV. • He was an artist during the Baroque period. • Painted mostly still life, portraits, and religious pieces.
Early Life: • Juan Rodríguez de Silva and Jerónima Velázquez. • Velázquez was educated by his parents. • Received good training in language and philosophy, but showed an early gift for art.
Francisco de Herrera: • A vigorous painter who disregarded the Italian influence of the early Seville school. • Velázquez studied art with him for one year. • He learned to use different paint brushes with long bristles from Herrera.

Artwork: • Velasquez’s artwork fell into the category of Bodegón. • Bodegón comprised everyday subjects combined with still life, portraits, and religious scenes. • One of his earliest Bodegóns was an art piece called The Meal.
