What did they run into one day? Thunderstorms – thunder-battle GUFFAWING: loud, unrestrained burst of laughter 3. What is Thorin’s complaint? What is the solution? * Going to get blown off, drown, struck by lightning, or picked up & kicked by giant if stay where they’re at * Send Fili & Kili to look for better shelter

  2. 4. What is found? Dry cave not far around next corner – ponies & all will fit 5. What does the wizard question? What is the answer? * If they THOROUGHLY explored it * Yes – wasn’t that big or go back that far 6. What does the wizard do when they get there? Took out his want & explored cave from end to end 7. In the end, the cave is described as being what? Why? * Fair size – not too large & mysterious * Dry floor – some comfortable nooks – room for ponies

  3. 8. What happens in the middle of the night? * Crack in floor opened into wide passage * Lots of big, great ugly-looking goblins jumped up & grabbed dwarves – all except Gandalf 9. Where do they end up? Big cavern w/ more goblins waiting – ponies & baggage already there 10. What happened to the ponies? Goblins ate them 11. What does the Great Goblin accuse them of? Spying – stealing - murdering 12. What is Thorin’s reply? Politely say they were just seeking shelter from storm

  4. 13. What does the Great Goblin ask next? What’s Thorin’s reply? * What are you doing in mountains? Where coming from? Where going to? * Journey to visit relatives on East side 14. What does one of the drivers inquire about? Why is it important? * To explain sword Thorin took from trolls * Killed hundreds of goblins 15. What does that cause? Great Goblin gets angry – shouts murders – elf-friends – slash them – beat them – bite them – gnash them – put them in deep holes w/ snakes

  5. 16. What suddenly happens? Lights went out – great fire went out into tower of blue glowing smoke up to roof – scattered piercing white sparks among goblins 17. What affect does it have on the goblins? * Yelling – yammering – croaking – jibbering – jabbering – howls – growls – curses – shrieking - striking * Sparks burned holes in them – smoke made air thick – goblins falling over one another 18. What suddenly happens next? Sword flashed its own light – goes through & kills Great Goblin – goblin soldiers flee

  6. 19. What do the dwarves hear? What do they do? * “ ‘Follow me quick!’” * Run as fast as they can down dark passages – following a pale light 20. What do we learn about the swords? * Glamdring the Foe-Hammer: cut chains off dwarves – goblins called it “Beater” & hated it worse than “Biter” * Saved orcrist – Gandalf snatched it from goblin guard
