  3. George Frederic Handel • Feb 23, 1685 - April 14, 1759 • Grew up in Germany, then later on moved to England during his later 20’s • Wrote operas, hymns, oratorios, anthems, and concertos. • Composed in the Baroque style

  4. Serse • Written as an opera • Title(ombramia fu) means “Never was a shade” • First performed in London • Opera seria in three acts and is set in Persia

  5. Text • O peaceful shade, sheltering me tenderly, guarding me lovingly, so king, so true! • The tree is protecting whoever is sitting underneath it. They are safe underneath the shade.

  6. Musical Elements • Measure 24- the letter ‘O’ is carried out for 6 beats and is emphasized on how the tree protects whoever is sitting in the shade. • The music is soft and has a gentle melody tying it into the words.
