  1. The Four Marks of the Church One, holy, catholic, & apostolic

  2. One • ONE source—the Trinity • ONE founder—Christ • ONE soul—the Holy Spirit • ONE=Unity & Together • Together during the Profession of Faith • Together during common worship • Together with the Christ & the Apostles through Apostolic Succession and Holy Orders

  3. What is Apostolic Succession? • Apostolic Succession is the line of bishops stretching back to the apostles. All over the world, all Catholic bishops are part of a lineage that goes back to the time of the apostles.

  4. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that: • "The Church is one: she acknowledges one Lord, confesses one faith, is born of one Baptism, forms only one Body, is given life by one Spirit, for the sake of one hope, at whose fulfillment all divisions will be overcome."

  5. Holy • Church consists of • The holy people of God • United by Christ • Sanctified (made holy) by Christ

  6. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that: • The Church is holy: the Most Holy God is her author; Christ, her bridegroom, gave himself up to make her holy; the Spirit of holiness gives her life. Since she still includes sinners, she is "the sinless one made up of sinners". Her holiness shines in the saints; in Mary she is already all-holy."

  7. catholic • Not capitalized when not talking about our religion • Means UNIVERSAL—for everyone • Christ is present in the church & Christ’s message was meant to be shared with EVERYBODY.

  8. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that: • "The Church is catholic: she proclaims the fulness of the faith. She bears in herself and administers the totality of the means of salvation. She is sent out to all peoples. She speaks to all men. She encompasses all times. She is "missionary by her very nature".

  9. Apostolic • Founded on the Apostles in three ways: • Built on the foundation of the Apostles • Holy Spirit helps us to hold on to the teachings of the Apostles. • Church is guided by the Apostles through their successors. • Who are they? • What is this called?

  10. The Catechism of the Catholic Church states that: • "The Church is apostolic. She is built on a lasting foundation: "the twelve apostles of the Lamb". She is indestructible. She is upheld infallibly in the truth: Christ governs her through Peter and the other apostles, who are present in their successors, the Pope and the college of bishops.
