  3. Preheadword Position • use nouns, adjectives and determiners

  4. Postheadword position • use prepositional phrases, participial phrases and relative clauses

  5. Preheadword position (Words that come before the noun in a noun phrase)

  6. Determiners • Articles • Possessive nouns • Possessive pronouns • Demonstrative pronouns • Numbers

  7. Determiners • The leprechaun (article) • Kaleigh’s gold (possessive noun) • My green beer (possessive pronoun) • Those four-leaf clovers (demonstrative) • Two rainbows (numbers)

  8. Adjectives • Fill the slot between the determiner and headword • Modify or describe the headword

  9. Adjectives • The shiny gold (det.) (adjective) (headword) • The green shamrock (det.) (adjective) (headword)

  10. Postheadword position (Words/phrases that come after the noun in the noun phrase)

  11. Prepositional Phrases • identical to the adverbial prepositional phrase • time, place, direction, purpose, origin, etc. • “Which one?” or “What kind of?”

  12. Prepositional Phrases • The Irish man on the barstool • The leprechaun of many talents • The rainbow to the left

  13. Relative Clauses • dependent clauses • Identifies noun or pronoun it modifies • “Which one?” or “What kind of?” • a sentence pattern except for introductory word who, whose, whom, which or that

  14. Relative Clauses • The student who is wearing a green shirt • The clover that has four leaves

  15. Participial Phrases • Essentially a reduced relative clause

  16. Participial Phrases • Relative Clause = The girl who is drinking green beer • Participial Phrase = The girl drinking green beer

  17. Participial Phrases • The man dancing a jig • Relative clause = The man who is dancing a jig
