Policy Management, its Relationship to Quality of Service and Case Studies By Tyh-Dar Fan Supervisor: Prof. Raimo Kantola Place: Espoo
Outline of the Presentation • The Objective of the Thesis • What does Policy Management do? • PM Architectures • PM & QoS Mechanisms • Case Studies
The Objective of the Thesis • To understand the goals, architectures, and mechanisms of Policy Management • Demonstrate a mutual relationship between PM & QoS • Present industry cases of PM manufacturers
What does Policy Management do? • Highway analogy • 3 general types of traffics • Traditional NMS categories of PM, AM, SM, CM • People, Hardware,Time frame, and geographic locations
PM & QoS Mechanisms • Traffic Classification (by apple or add), Packet Marking (priority), Admission/access Control • Resources Reservation (RSVP) • Traffic Shaping and Traffic Limiting • Congestion Avoidance (RED), Congestion Management • Queuing (PQ, WFQ, and CQ)
Case Studies & Methods used for acquiring information • Cisco: coloring, traffic s&l, Ding. Comprehensive (voice, Internet) like MS • Sitar: More focus on business traffic, good GUI but still quite generic • FullArmor: Not so much QoS, more system PM. Backs up Windows 2000. Some innovative ideas like planning • Nortel and Lucent: Also QoS-oriented, good for telephony and interface w/ switches • Future Works
