  3. Central Idea • True love of mother towards her children. Eg; My mother only said Thank god the scorpion picked on me And spared my children

  4. What I wonder !! • Irrational beliefs of villagers. Eg; Buzzed the name of God a hundred times To paralyze the Evil one.

  5. Why did they react this way? • 1. Due to illiteracy • 2. Superstitions.

  6. What should they have done? • Taken the woman to a Doctor • Apply some ointment. • First aid by tying the effected area. • Do not disturb her.

  7. Do we have to blame them? • No !

  8. What are superstitions? False beliefs in spite of evidence/no evidence. • To account for one mystery by another. • Age old beliefs.

  9. Why superstitions? • My mom said. • My grandmother said. • My friends spoke. • I read in books.

  10. Popular superstitions • FRIDAY 13TH – CONSIDERD TO BE UNLUCKY . • BLACK CATS— Crossing your path. • WALKING UNDER LADDER • SPILLING SALT • THREE BUTTERFLIES TOGETHER • CUTTING NAILS ON FRIDAY

  11. True /False • These colorful customs, no matter how absurd, keep the religious folk busy and the irreverent ones in mirth. • Many of these customs came about for perfectly valid reasons in the past, but don’t you feel that they are now being followed only as mere rites?

  12. Reasoning • God Bless You. During the sixth century, it was customary to congratulate people who sneezed because they were expelling evil from their bodies. Later, when a great plague took hold of Europe, and people began sneezing violently, the Pope passed a law. Since sneezing meant that the person was going to die of plague, people were required to bless the sneezer. • Don't spill the salt. Although some people believe that Judas spilt salt during the last supper, this claim can't be proven. Salt was a very precious expensive commodity in the middle ages. It was also used for medicinal purposes. If you spilled any, you must immediately throw it over your left shoulder to strike the nasty spirits in the eye, thus preventing sickness.

  13. Isn’t it convincing? • Pie In The Sky. Of course, this means to search for the impossible dream but it originated in the early 1900's. A famous labor organizer named Joe Hill was extremely critical of the clergy's treatment of slaves. He wrote a tune called 'The Preacher and the Slave" accusing the clergy of making false promises of a better life in heaven while people starved on earth. The song goes: 'Work and pray, live on hay. You'll get pie in the sky when you die. That's a lie!'

  14. Amazing fact • Mark Twain's "Tom Sawyer" has a lot of the superstitions of the day and brief explanations of what they meant (though not why)... He mentions "ticking" in the wall as being a "death clock", counting down someone's last seconds. -

  15. Views of educated persons !!! • Remember that all religion is based on superstition. Without a belief in rituals, luck, miracles, Gods that can't be seen, evil, or anything else, religion would just be a state of mind. - Steven -

Some fun facts about how superstitions effect our world... • 80 percent of high rises don't have a 13th floor • Most airports don't have a 13th gate • I was also told that in Italy there isn't a 13 in their national lottery. • Also, These men all have 13 letters in their name:Jack the Ripper, Albert De Salvo, Charles Manson, Osama Bin Laden, Jeffery Dahmer, Saddam Hussein, Theodore Bundy

  17. conclusion • Evidently, superstitions are different in different parts of the country. • A situation which turns out to be good for a man needn’t necessarily be good to others.

  18. My opinion • Despite the education background people have superstitions.

  19. solution • Develop scientific out look • Think logically. • Think rationally.
