Causes of the War • Communism was a major cause of this war. • Vietnam was a communist country. • The U.S joined the Vietnam war because they wanted to stop Vietnam from being a communist country. • People called the “Vietcong” were communists that came from North Vietnam and came to South Vietnam to build bases and invade in South Vietnam’s government.
The Sides • North Vietnam was a Communist country. • South Vietnam was not. • The United States made an alliance with South Vietnam to stop the northern communists. • The Soviet Union supported North Vietnam.
Fighting Increased • Lyndon B. Johnson sent more troops to help South Vietnam. • US Troops used advanced technology. They had tanks, bombers, and helicopters for quickly moving troops around.
They fought in groups and used the jungle to as a place to hide in and attack from. Better technology did not give the United States troops a clear advantage against the small fast-moving bands of Vietcong soldiers. Even though the US was bigger and had more powerful weapons, the Vietcong controlled most of South Vietnam.
Costs of War • The costs of war were large. • The U.S. had to pay billions of dollars for supplies • Soldiers were continuously dying. • 1,597,426-3,677,426 people died during the Vietnam war.
Antiwar Movement • Certain people thought that the U.S. should not interfere with the war. • They did something called a demonstration. • A demonstration was a gathering of people who wanted to express their opinions about the government and the public. • Many young mean feared the draft. • On May 1967 in New York City there was a demonstration that had about 250,000 protesters. By this time, even members of Congress were speaking out against the Vietnam War.
Television Television brought images of war right into people’s living rooms. Nearly every night, viewers watched soldiers fighting dangerous battles. They saw the terrible effect of the United States air bombings on civilians. People’s feelings about the war grew stronger, whether they were for the war or against it.
Battles • Dak To lasted from November 3 to November 22, 1967and there was a total of 3,341 casualties. • The Battle of Kontum lasted from May 2 to July 1, 1972 and there were over 1,000 casualties on the South Vietnam and U.S. side and about 20,000-40,000 for North Vietnam
How it all ended Richard Nixon became president and wanted to bring the troops home. In 1973, North Vietnam, South Vietnam, and the United States sighed a cease-fire. A cease-fire is an agreement to stop all the fighting. The US soldiers in Vietnam went home. Once the US soldiers were gone, the communist began attacking again. Two years later, North Vietnam defeated South Vietnam.
