Developmental School Counseling Lesson Plan • ASCA: Standard 4: The PSC provides responsive services through effective use of individual and small-group counseling, consultation and referral skills. (ASCA National Model pp. 63). • Education Trust: TSC must serve all students and not just a few.

  5. Competencies • Students will acquire knowledge of terms and concepts related to coping with difficult situations.

  6. Learning Objectives • Students will be able to identify difficult situations they face in their daily life. • Students will identify their own coping strategies. • Students will acquire additional strategies to cope with difficult situations.

  7. Materials • Hand-out “Ways of Coping With Difficult Situations.” • A journal. Source: http://www.yale.edu/ynhti

  8. Activities • Instructor will go over the terms on their hand-outs to make sure students understand each one. • Instructor will ask students if anyone would like to share an experience of each one as they go down the list.

  9. Activities • Students will be asked to write in their journal in response to the prompt “When I am upset I…” • Students will have an opportunity to share what they’ve written, if they choose.

  10. Assessment/ Follow-UpExperiential • Students will be asked to turn in their essays. • Students will be asked to write about 3 new strategies they learned and in what situation in their lives they would apply these strategies.

  11. Assessment/ Follow-UpData • School Counselor will gather data of incidences of fighting, assaults, suspensions, and students being sent to see the Principle and/or counselor and disaggregate to see if there are lower rates of these occurrences.
