Breaking New Ground Transitioning to the Common Core and Next Generation Science Standards through Teacher Driven Professional Development Karin Ribaudo June 2013
Overview of Project • Started in June 2012 with all-school Professional Development • Desire to continue all-school Professional Development not a possibility • Attempted electronic Professional Development via Evernote to minimal success • Continued Professional Development within science department by empowering and equipping science teachers • Opportunity to expand sphere of influence through district Instructional Leadership Team trainings
Rationale/Needs Addressed • Content Needs: Uncertain times in education as we transition away from 1997 standards and toward Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards • Organizational Needs: Teacher Leadership is the most effective (and cost efficient) way to navigate change • Site Needs: Our site requested Professional Development, and school restructuring affected site culture
Project Vision/Goals • As a Teacher Leader, I believe in empowering others to find innovative approaches to teaching. By seeing the potential in all educators, I am able to facilitate teams who can be proactive in striving for continuous improvement. When functional teams are in place, individuals are able to have fun while staying student-centered, ultimately benefiting the students, the school, and the community.
Project Vision/Goals • Measurable Goals: • Beginning implementation of Common Core State Standards and Next Generation Science Standards • Trained Teacher Leaders • Empowered and Equipped Teacher Leaders • Teacher driven Professional Development • Improved School Culture as a result of Teacher driven Professional Development

Next Steps for the Project • Continue to train ILT members in leadership skills • Continue to teach strategies to facilitate transitions to CCCSS and NGSS • Use RCOE Science Teacher Leadership training to empower other science teachers • Advocate for teacher driven professional development and time for teachers to work together, analyze implementation, and create informed next steps • Advocate for Professional Development as a tool to improve School Culture
Learning/Growth • My one big takeaway from this capstone project is that the challenges of leadership grow as the number of individuals one is trying to lead grows • I also learned that the power of individuals working together is infinitely more powerful than one person working alone • I grew as a leader in my ability to empower others rather than trying to lead by myself from the top • I now feel confident in having Crucial Conversations and dealing with difficult situations head on, rather than skirting around issues
