Participation Forms • EL 2 – Physical Form (physician signature & date) • EL 3 – Consent & Liability Form (include insurance!!!!) • EL 3CH – Concussion & Heat Illness Waivers • Harassment & Hazing Form • Athlete Code of Conduct • Pay to Participate Form • Transportation Form (all sports but football) • GA 4 – Transfer Forms (if you in 10th, 11th, 12th grade and are new to UHS – you started ninth grade somewhere other than UHS.) **Make sure all forms have parent & student signatures & dates**
Pay to Participate • Volusia County School District Fee – allows each athletic department to fund operations • Does not guarantee playing time • $75.00 for your first sport • $25.00 for your second sport • No additional fee for 3rd or 4th sport • Is payable each year • Checks are payable to “University High School”
FHSAA Eligibility • Must be a registered & enrolled student at University • Must be younger than 19 years and 9 months • Has 4 years of eligibility upon completion of 8th grade (8 consecutive semesters) • Must maintain a cumulative unweighted GPA of 2.0 or higher • 9th graders – must be regularly promoted to ninth grade, satisfactory attendance & discipline in 8th grade.
Pass to Play • School Board Policy 313 • In addition to maintaining 2.0 GPA, students must also receive a D or higher in each core class for the semester to be eligible for the following semester. • Core Classes – Math, Science, English, & Social Studies courses needed for graduation
What Happens When YOU are Ineligible? • Students who are ruled ineligible due to academics are not allowed to compete in games for one semester. • Exception – If it is a Pass to Play issue and you are able to remediate the grade prior to the completion of the following semester, you may be reinstated. An official grade change must occur. Remediation is at teacher discretion and is not guaranteed.
Study Table Our goal as a coaching staff is to see you successful academically. We want to watch cross the stage at the end of four years. • Study Table is run by several teachers • Offered 3 days a week – Monday, Tuesday, Thursday • Always available to those who choose to go voluntarily. • If you are assigned to ST, you must attend 2X per week until the next grades are issued – either mid-terms or end of marking period. • Assignments will be made at both mid-terms & at end of first & third marking periods. • Assignments made to those with F’s in core subjects at mid-terms or end of first or third marking periods.
Graduation Requirements Guidance Department is the best resource for questions regarding Graduation Requirements/Virtual School/Credit/Scheduling • 4 Credits – English • 4 Credits – Math • Must include Alg 1 • 3 Credits – Science • Must include Biology & a Physical Science (Chemistry, Physics, Physical Science) • 3 Credits – Social Studies • World History, American History, Government & Economics • 1 Credit – Performing Arts • 1 Credit – Physical Education • 8 Credits - Electives • Must have a 2.0 GPA • Must have passed Reading FCAT in 10th grade (or retakes in 11th or 12th)
Education Based Athletics • Extension of the Learning Environment & Classroom • This philosophy usually differs from Club, Travel, Recreation, & Youth Sports Teams. • Coaches will work to develop not just sport specific skills but also the whole STUDENT-ATHLETE. • Time Management, Adversity, Perserverance, Dedication, Teamwork, Self Advocacy among others are character traits worth developing • While winning is nice and an admirable goal, it isn’t everything. Success is determined by the quality of citizens we develop.
The Role of Parents • Be Supportive, Be Present, Be Encouraging • Be YOUR Child’s #1 Fan! • Please allow coaches to coach during practice and games without interference. Please do not put your child in a situation of whether to listen to you or to listen to their coach. If you have a concern, please contact the coach for a meeting. Approaching after a competition is not a good time. • Captain’s Council Statement “Parents, please understand that growing up and separating myself from you is natural. Please allow me to grow up and become independent.”
Athletic Facilities Varsity Football – Deltona High School Practice – UHS Game Field JV Football – UHS Game Field Volleyball – UHS Gym Cross Country – UHS Track & Athletic Fields Swimming – Four Townes/Deltona YMCA Bowling – AMF Lanes – Orange City Golf – Debary Golf & Country Club Occasionally @ Glen Abbey Parents are responsible for transportation to practice & home competitions for off site facilities.
Admission to Events • Athletic Passes - $50/adults, $35/students (K – 12) • Valid for regular season only. Not valid for Pre-Season, Post Season, Away events, In-School events, Non-Athletic Dept sponsored events • Varsity Football - $6.00/adults, $3.00/students (K – 12) • All other Home events $5.00/adults, $3.00/students (K – 12) • Away events will have a charge • Post Season (Districts/Regionals/States) will have increased ticket prices as dictated by the FHSAA.
Practice & Try-Out Expectations • Attendance at practices is mandatory. • Excused absences must be communicated to the coach before the absence • Repeated absences may result from dismissal from the team • Missing teammates hurts the development of the team • Try-Out Procedures will be communicated on first day of practice • There are multiple factors that are considered when selecting a team • It is often the most difficult aspect of coaching • There are NO guaranteed spots on teams or playing time. • Coaches decisions are final. • If an athlete wishes to know what areas should be improved on for future consideration, the athlete should schedule an opportunity to speak with the coach. This will help the student-athlete develop their own self-advocacy and communication skills.

Concussions • A concussion is defined as…a brain injury. • If an athlete is removed from practice or game for a head injury they are done for the day. • Please report any head injury to Athletic Director or Certified Athletic Trainer as quickly as possible, so proper protocol can begin. • Student-Athlete must complete Post-Injury Protocol • Must be cleared by physician once initial symptoms have cleared. • 4 day gradual return to play activity completed by athlete & ATC • Final clearance must be given by team physician – Dr. John Hill
Sportsmanship • We expect… • Players to Play • Coaches to Coach • Officials to Officiate • Spectators to CHEER!!!! • Please allow everyone to do their job • Please respect Players, Coaches, Officials, and other Spectators • As a school we wish to demonstrate hospitality to our guests. We play the game between the lines and ask that everyone treat others as you would wish your child, spouse, family member to be treated if they were in that position
