  4. WHY? • SOVIET EXPANSION INTO EASTERN EUROPE • COUNTRIES OCCUPIED BY THE NAZIS AND LIBERATED BY THE SOVIETS BECOME SATELLITE NATIONS

  5. The Marshall Plan • PART OF ECONOMIC RECOVERY PLAN FOR EUROPE • U.S. WOULD GIVE FINANCIAL AID TO EUROPE • SOVIET UNION CONTROLLED COUNTRIES DON’T PARTICIPATE • MONEY GOES TO STIMULATE WESTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES.

  6. Berlin Airlifts • FIRST MAJOR CONFRONTATION OF THE COLD WAR • JUNE 1948 – May 1949 • STALIN BLOCKADES THE CITY OF BERLIN STILL DIVIDED INTO FOUR ZONES

  7. U.S. MAKES REGULAR FLIGHTS TO DELIVER NECESSARY GOOD TO CITY. • 500 FLIGHTS A DAY; OVER 250,000 IN 10 MONTHS. • LASTED 10 MONTHS…SOVIETS EVENTUALLY END IT

  8. NATO • NORTH ATLANTIC TREATY ORGANIZATION • 12 European Nations (Plus Canadia & the U.S.) • An attack against 1 = attack against all!!!

  9. NATO • North Atlantic Treaty Organization • Created in 1949 as a Military Alliance • Original members: Belgium Canada Denmark France Iceland Italy • Exists to protect each member country from Soviet/Russian takeover, occupation or invasion. Luxemburg Netherlands Norway Portugal UK USA

  10. NSC 68 • NATIONAL SECURITY COUNCIL DOCUMENT • Itn’l Policy/Strategy • U.S. must triple its DEFENSE BUDGET • Based on New Demands for GLOBAL SECURITY: (Soviet threat of communism)

  12. WARSAW PACT • AGREEMENT MADE BETWEEN EASTERN EUROPEAN COUNTRIES STILL UNDER SOVIET CONTROL/INFLUENCE • AKA = SOVIET SATELLITE NATIONS • MADE IN RESPONSE TO NATO. MAYBE THIS ANGERED SOME EUROPEANS LIVING IN COMMUNIST EUROPE?

  13. WARSAW PACT • Create in 1955 as a balance to the power of NATO. • Original Memebers: Soviet Union Albania Poland Romania Hungary East Germany Czechoslovakia Bulgaria
