  2. What is Intimate Care? • Intimate care encompasses areas of personal care, which most people carry out for themselves but some children in early years settings and schools are unable to do so because of their age or individual requirements.

  3. Trafford Intimate Care Guidelines • The purpose of these guidelines is to set out a framework within which all children may have the opportunity to access childcare and school. • The responsibilities of teachers and support staff are to assist and protect the dignity and rights of all children and young people.

  4. Intimate Care • The guidance is not prescriptive but offers advice in relation to good practice based on practical experience. • Staff should have an awareness of guidelines and be encouraged to follow them for their own protection as well as the protection of children. Everybody has a right to be safe-but inappropriate and over zealous approaches to risk management of intimate care can negate children's life chances and have a long lasting impact on their future development and achievements.

  5. Intimate Care • Placements should have a policy and procedures in place as part of child protection advice to safeguard adults and children. • Whilst the young children will vary in terms of age, background, ethnicity, level of dependency and communication skills they have a right to be treated with sensitivity and respect, so that their experience of intimate care is a positive one.

  6. Policy and Procedures • Service providers should attempt to cover all the following in their policies and procedures: • Written agreements and protocols • Detailed information on children • Health care/toileting plan • Written consent • Basic training • Specific training/review of competency

  7. SUMMARY • There are common situations and dilemmas facing establishments where children receive intimate care. There are no right answers since circumstances may vary. • It is not only disabled children’s impairments which determine the quality of their life… disabling attitudes and a disabling environment can result in unequal access to a wide range of community services and facilities.
