Main Facts. • Big Ben is actually the name of the bell located at the north-eastern end of the Palace of Westminster in London. But many people refer to Big Ben as the clock and the clock tower. • The tower was part of Charles Barry design for the new palace, because the old palace had been burned in 1834 due to a fire in the Lord’s Chamber.
The clock was fully functional in 1856. It took 13 years to complete. The tower is 316 feet tall and actually has several small rooms built within the lower part of the tower. Including a small prison cell. • It currently holds the record for world’s largest four-faced chiming clock.
The Many Bells. • The main bell, known as the Great Bell, is the largest bell in the tower. The bell weighs 13.8 tons and was first rung in 1859.
