How to Analyze a Written Text • First, let’s start w/ the DEFINITION of rhetoric. • Rhetoric: the study & the art of using language effectively. • Rhetoric study includes delving into the strategies & techniques a writer uses to promote their argument & position. Rhetorical appeals are used to persuade an audience to the side of the argument the author is promoting.

The Rhetorical Triangle /The Aristotelian Triad • The source’s credibility, the speaker’s/author’s authority. • The logic used to support a claim (induction & deduction); can also be the facts & statistics used to help support the argument. • The emotional or motivational appeals; vivid language, emotional language & numerous sensory details.
