  1. Earth’s History3 Human Evolution For notes, copy underlined portions.

  2. How Old Are We? • Scientists think that the first relatives of modern humans evolved about 30 mya.

  3. What Are We? • Humans are classified as primates, mammals related to apes and monkeys.

  4. Primates? • Characteristics of primates. • Most have four fingers and an opposable thumb. • Both eyes are located at the front of the head. This gives 3D vision, both eyes see the image slightly differently and the brain puts them together. Video: Notes Earths History3 Primates

  5. Characteristics

  6. Our Family • The closest relative of humans is thought to be the chimpanzee. It is thought that humans and chimpanzees share a common ancestor from about 7 mya. Video: Notes Earths History3 chimpanzees

  7. Related?

  8. Hominids? • Humans belong to a family called hominids (humans walking on 2 legs), which is different from monkeys.

  9. Walking Different Eyes face forward. Human pelvis is verticle and helps hold the skeleton upright. Gorilla pelvis is tilted forward to make them lean and long arms help to walk.

  10. Primate History • The first primates are thought to have evolved about 55 mya. • They are thought to have been mouse-like mammals that lived in trees. • Fossils of hominids have been found that date back 4.4 mya.

  11. First Primates Lemurs Our Possible Ancestors Video: Notes Earths History3 Lemurs

  12. Earliest Man • Paleontologists think hominid evolution began in Africa with australopithecus or “southern man ape”. • Mary Leakey discovered footprints in Laetoli Tanzania from 3.6 mya.

  13. Lucy • In 1979 the most complete set of australopithecus fossils were found in Ethiopia. This skeleton, nicknamed “Lucy” is believed to have lived over 2 mya.

  14. Australopithecus Small Brains Long Arms Short Legs Video: Notes Earths History3 Australopithecus

  15. Homo Whatulis? • The first human-like relatives first evolved about 2.3 mya and were called Homo habilis.

  16. Homo Whatulis? • Homo erectus evolved about 2 mya and is closely related to modern humans. • Homo erectus lived in caves, built fires, hunted large animals, made and used tools, and wore clothing.

  17. Homo erectus

  18. Homo erectus • The appearance of Homo erectus marks the beginning of the expansion of human populations across the globe. • Homo erectus survived for over 1 million years.

  19. More Man • Present day humans called Homo sapiens first evolved about 200,000 years ago in Africa. Video: Notes Earths History3 Homo sapiens

  20. Homo sapiens

  21. Caveman • Neanderthals- a species of hominid that lived in Europe over 30,000 years ago. • Neanderthals may have cared for their sick, buried their dead, made fires, and hunted large animals. Video: Notes Earths History3 Introducing Neanderthal

  22. Neanderthals Video: Notes Earths History3 The Morphology of Neanderthal

  23. Our Ancestors • Cro-Magnons were the first modern humans evolving about 100,000 years ago in Africa. • The only difference from modern man is that Cro-Magnons had thicker bones. Video: Notes Earths History3 Cro magnons
