  2. Five Critical Questions before you begin writing: • For whom am I writing? • What is my purpose for writing this? • What is my topic or thesis? • What is my current background of knowledge on this topic? • What resources will I use for writing/research?

  3. For Whom am I writing? • Knowing your audience allows you to set the tone for your writing. You must know your audience to be able to write for maximum effectiveness. Here are some questions to ask yourself. • #1 What is your relationship with the audience? • Will your classmates read the paper? • Is the instructor going to be the only reader? • Is the paper for the general public? • #2 What is the audience’s familiarity with the subject matter? • Are they experts? • Are they novices? • Is it a mixed group?

  4. What is my purpose for writing this? • The purpose of your writing is also very critical to the way you write. If you are writing to persuade, your overall tone will be different than if you are writing to convey knowledge. What is the difference? • Persuasive writing tries to convince your audience. • Informative writing provides information, but makes no claims.

  5. What is my topic or thesis? • The entire paper is written around your topic or thesis. You must have a well defined topic and this topic must be evident throughout the entire paper. From the introduction to the conclusion, your topic must remain consistent and evident. To do so, • Reveal your topic immediately • Make sure each section develops your topic

  6. What do I know about this topic? • If the topic is one with which you are already familiar, you will have some understanding about what you are writing. • Utilize your strength of prior Knowledge • However, if the topic is assigned to you and you have little background knowledge, you must read and research even more to be able to convey a basic understanding. • Become an expert through extensive research

  7. What resources will I use for writing/research? • How is the paper to be formatted? • Modern Language Association (MLA) • American Psychological Association (APA) • Are you familiar with the format requested?

  8. What resources will I use for writing/research? • If all research will be done online, you will need to decide if the information can be found with typical search engines or if specialized databases are needed. • If research is to be done using a regular library, you must determine if the local community library will suffice or if you need to travel to a University or research facility library.

  9. In Conclusion • You must address each of the following: • Audience • Purpose • Topic/Thesis • Current Knowledge/ Background on Topic • Writing Resources necessary Following each of these steps will ensure that you have great start even before you begin your writing.
