  1. Cultural Relevance WEEK TWO

  2. Food from around the world • Before we go over our worksheet, let’s take a look at some food from around the world! • See if the pictures look like what you thought they might look like based on what you know about different cultures

  3. Russia:

  4. China:

  5. India:

  6. Italy:

  7. Worksheet: Food around the world • How do we celebrate… • New Year? • Weddings? • Birthdays?

  8. Let’s shift our focus… • Away from food and back to culture • We will have a staged role play about cultural interaction • Three groups of students • Volunteers for observers?

  9. How you will be graded: • Observers: for recording your observations • Participants: for following your culture’s rules • This will be a 10 point in class assignment • Tomorrow, a quiz will be given asking you about the role play from class today • PAY ATTENTION TO THE INTERACTIONS! • Afterwards we will debrief and discuss what occurred with the help of our observers

  10. Observers: • Watch closely as two different cultural groups—the Pandyas and the Chispas—interact. • You may move among the participants, but you may not touch or speak to them. • Your observations will help the class view the lesson with a wider perspective during debriefing!

  11. Two cultures meet: • CHISPAS • PANDYAS • You will be given the norms and behaviors for YOUR CULTURE • DO NOT SHARE THEM WITH ANYONE!!! • This will result in a zero for the day and dismissal from class • You will be graded on how well you act out the norms • If you break a rule, YOU LOSE POINTS!

  12. Rules to follow: • Follow the guidelines for interacting as stated on your sheet • We will have roughly five-ten minutes to interact • I will meet with each group privately before we begin • If you are being to silly, goofy, or over the top you will lose points or be asked to sit out

  13. The prompt: • Two student groups from imaginary countries have been invited to a party sponsored by an international student-exchange organization. • The party organizers hope the two groups will get acquainted and learn about each other. • When students return to their home schools, they will present culture reports to their classmates. The students are welcome to mingle, hang out, and talk.

  14. Music • The music playing in the background will serve as a simulation for background music at the party • When the time is up, I will stop the music, we will return to our seats and then discuss what we saw • TOMORROW: A quiz on the discussion and your reaction to what happened in class!

  15. Reports: • Each group will have 5 minutes to create a brief report. The Chispas' report will describe Pandya behavior and the values that their classmates could expect to encounter if they visited the Pandya nation. The Pandyas will create a similar description of the Chispas' culture.

  16. Discussion • Let’s go over several aspects of the interaction • Try to participate at least once in the discussion
