Mesopotamia means “land between the rivers.” • The flatland bordering a river is a floodplain.
Silt is the fine soil deposited by floodwaters. • Semiarid climate is having little rainfall & warm temperatures. • Drought is a period of little or no rainfall.
A surplus is an amount of a good that is in excess of what is needed. • A civilization is an advanced form of culture. • A city-state is a political unit that includes a city and its nearby farmlands.
A ziggurat is an ancient Sumerian or Babylon temple that rose in a series of step-like levels. • Polytheism is a belief in many gods or goddesses. • A king is a leader of a group of people.
Bronze is a metal made of copper and tin. • A pictograph is a picture or drawing that represents a word or idea. • A stylus is a sharpened reed used to press markings into clay tablets.
Cuneiform is a type of writing made up of wedge-shaped markings • A scribe is a person who specializes in writing and serves as a record keeper. • Rivers made agriculture possible – providing water and transportation.
NATURAL challenges in ancient Mesopotamia included drought, floods, & lack of resources. • Sumerians developed the first writing system. • Sumerian society was divided into classes.
The Sumerians worshipped many gods. • The Sumerian temple was called the ziggurat. • City-states formed the government throughout Sumer.
At first, priests ruled Sumer. Later, powerful men became kings. • Irrigation invention helped provide a steady source of water for crops. • The Sumerians invented the wheel & the plow.
The two great rivers of Ancient Mesopotamia are the Tigris and the Euphrates. • Ancient Mesopotamia was located where present-day Iraq is today.
