  1. AP StatisticsFriday, 06 September 2013 • OBJECTIVETSW construct histograms & scatterplots. • ASSIGNMENT DUE • WS Graphing (wire basket) • ASSIGNMENTS DUE MONDAY • Sec. 3.1 • Sec. 3.2 • T-Shirt money is due TODAY ! ! ! !

  2. How to describe a graph Dotplots Stem & leaf plots Histograms Boxplots

  3. 1. Center • discuss where the middle of the data falls • three types of central tendency • mean, median, & mode

  4. 2. Spread • discuss how spread out the data is • refers to the variability of the data • Range, standard deviation, IQR

  5. 3. Type of distribution • refers to the overall shape of the distribution • symmetrical, uniform, skewed, or bimodal

  6. 4. Unusual occurrences • outlier - value that lies away from the rest of the data • gaps • clusters • anything else unusual

  7. 5. In context • You must write your answer in reference to the specifics in the problem, using correct statistical vocabulary and using complete sentences!

  8. Video: Histograms • Assignment: • Sec. 3.3: pp. 115-120 (3.25 – 3.28 all, 3.30, 3.32, 3.33, 3.35, 3.39) • Omit 3.26, 3.27, 3.32, 3.35 • WS Sec. 3.1 – 3.2

  9. AP StatisticsMonday, 09 September 2013 • OBJECTIVETSW construct histograms & scatterplots. • Pick up papers from front table. • ASSIGNMENTS DUE • Sec. 3.1  wire basket • Sec. 3.2  black tray

  10. Displaying Bivariate Numerical Data A response variable measures an outcome of a study. An explanatory variable attempts to explain the observed outcomes. • The explanatory variable is always plotted on the horizontal axis of a scatterplot.

  11. Displaying Bivariate Numerical Data Two variables are positively associated when above-average values of one tend to accompany above-average values of the other, and below-average values tend similarly to occur together. Two variables are negatively associated when above-average values of one accompany below-average values of the other, and vice versa.

  12. Displaying Bivariate Numerical Data To construct the median trace of a scatterplot, • first slice the plot into vertical strips of equal width; • compute the median of the y-axis in each strip and plot this median vertically above the horizontal midpoint of the strip; and • connect the medians by straight line segments to form the median trace.

  13. Displaying Bivariate Numerical Data Video: SCATTERPLOTS

  14. Assignment • WSScatterplots • Sec. 3.4: pp. 128-131(3.42, 3.43, 3.46, 3.51) omit 3.51 • Both are due Thursday (test day).
