  1. Unit 13 2D Digital Arts for Computer Games – Evaluation By Rian Neal 05.03.13

  2. What? What is the project about? The project is about designing a character and improving it by using Photoshop and also making the character move using Flash software. The character will be animated in a very short 10 second film. Who is in the video? I first designed a character by using Hero Machine which is a website I got from Moodle. This is Hero Machine Website - http://www.heromachine.com/heromachine-3-lab When I had finished designing a character from Hero Machine I thought about changing this idea and came up with the character Super Boy. This would be my design for my animation video. My character is SuperBoy named Rion and he will be like Superman’s son in the animation. He will be flying though the city, dodging a few buildings on his way.

  3. How? How I made my character and animated it. So I started by hand drawing a character from my own ideas I had in my head. It was a hard thing to do because I am average at drawing so I knew it wouldn’t be perfect. After I had hand drawn my character I went to scan it into the computer via my email address. I logged onto my computer to download the file of my character and started using Photoshop to improving my character. The first thing I started was to add a black outline all around the character. This helps the character stand out more and helps when I start to add colour.

  4. Then, when I had finished outlining the character, I started working on colour. I did this by using Photoshop and adding a new layer for the colour. I Used the pencil tool to colour my character but it take too long to do, so I found out a way to do it quicker. It was pretty simple, I chose a colour and similar to the first stage, I clicked inside the outline and then used the bucket fill tool to fill in a block of colour. When the character had full colour, the next thing to do was cut out each body part, copy then paste it into a new layer in Photoshop. This was to prepare me for when using Flash. Flash can be very useful for making your character move. You can choose any background to add and its fun. My character will be flying though the city. I will create this by using the Flash software and will add in a busy city background by using Photoshop as well. I am still working on Flash at moment making my character fly though the city. The city background will be cartoon, the same as my character.

  5. Project Review My project review I think my project is going very well with my character drawing. I am using Photoshop to help design my character by adding colour and making minor improvements. The Positives – I did very well and I do know now how to draw a super hero using Photoshop. I also used a new, harder software for me, Flash. It is fun and challenging for me. The Negatives – I didn’t have enough time to finish it all off and finish the animation video. This was because I don’thave a background hand drawn yet. Also I was stuck with the Flash software because I forgot how to move the character, I finally remembered so will try and finish my animation. So far, the animation video has just a boy with a cape flying but I have left the legs and shoes behind because I didn’t have enough time to make them move. also there is no background at all. I hope next time I will have enough to finish it off before uploading it by the deadline!

  6. Future Work My future plan if I has more time to complete, I would have made more improvements on my character using Photoshop. I would have added in shadows, a tattoo on his arm and maybe other things that I’ve not yet had time to think about. Also I might try to design a good background of a city and sky for my character making the animation video look better for the viewer. I would have added in more detail for my character to fight crime and save people from the meteor coming crashing to the earth if the video was longer than a few seconds. My aim would be to try and make the video longer, more like 2 minutes. This would make the video more fun and exciting for the viewers to watch. I would like to make this video more than just a short, smooth animation. I would like to add much more action detail, it would be challenging but cool!
