St. Thomas Aquinas • Wrote the Summa Theologica (Summary of Christian beliefs) • Viewed both sides of questions before coming to an answer (Does God exist?) • Attempted to bring together info learned in the Bible with info learned through faith and reason
The Black Death (1347-1351) • Caused by rats carrying fleas on trading ships from Asia to Europe • 1/3 of Europe’s population died (Over 25 million people) • Blame? • Jewish populations • Sinful living • Result? Labor shortages, end of feudalism?
Hundred Years War (1337-1453) • England held small possession in France • King Phillip VI of France attempts to take this from England = WAR • King Edward of England declares war • New weapons emerge & knights become less important • Greater national feelings and loyalty to kings develop
Joan of Arc • Experienced visions – Believed she was commanded to free France • Inspired French army – drive English out of the city of Orleans • Captured and put to death • French win within 20 years after her death
The Great Schism (1378-1417) • The Pope often clashed with Europe’s secular (non-religious) rulers • Kings wanted to try priests and tax the Church…this was NOT okay with the Pope • Pope Urban VI (Italian) was elected • Later a Frenchman was elected • SO, there were 2 Popes = Great Schism
The Great Schism (1378-1417) Results? • Division of Europe (France & allies versus England & allies) 2. Weakening of the Church 3. New pope acceptable to all parties is elected
