  1. Section 1-4 Characteristics of Life

  2. In order to be considered living, an organism must possess all the characteristics of life.

  3. 1. Organization • All living organisms are composed of one or more cells. • Each cell contains DNA

  4. 2. Reproduction • The production of offspring • Not essential for the survival of an individual organism • Is essential for the survival of a species • Species – group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring

  5. 3. Growth and Development • Living things change during their lives • Growth – increase in the amount of living material and the formation of new structures • Development – the change that takes place during an organism’s life

  6. 4. Adjust to their Surroundings • Stimulus – any condition that requires an organism to adjust • Response – a reaction to a stimulus • All organisms respond to reach homeostasis (regulation of an organism’s internal environment)

  7. 5. Adapt and Evolve • Adaptation – any structure, behavior, or internal process that enables an organism to respond to stimuli and better survive in an environment • Inherited from previous generations • Evolution – the gradual accumulation of adaptations over time • Individuals with more suitable adaptations are more likely to survive and reproduce
