Households headed by single parents tend to be lower-income. 26% of Dallas County 3 and 4 year-olds are enrolled in public school pre-kindergarten programs. Pre-school attendance improves language and reading-readiness skills for low-income children. Dallas County leads the state in the percentage of uninsured children at almost 18%, (117,720 children). Uninsured children may not receive preventative care and are generally less healthy than insured children. 108,533 Dallas County children live in areas of concentrated poverty that lack quality-of-life amenities found in mixed-income neighborhoods.
