What are Health Champions ? • Lay people who include basic, key, health messages into daily encounters • Provide sign-positing into key services • Develop own knowledge and skills • Evidence suggests Health Champions can improve health • Not new – many people do this naturally • A co-ordinated programme offers support, sustainabilityand consistency
How to become a Health Champion • Attend 1 day accredited training • Training includes basic health-related information • Pass RSPH Level 1 training • Be able and keen to embed basic health advice into job/community/daily interactions • Attend (at least) 3 follow up support sessions
Progress to date • Community safety team, Ealing Council trained – 14 health champions • Interest from other teams – Youth Offending, Adult Social Services • In Hounslow over 200 people trained from community and voluntary sector
