Market update Expenditure on overseas studies dropped by 51.1 % in Nov 2008 But no signs of decrease in student number yet In 2007/08 UK with gradual increase in First Degree and 6% increase in PGT USA strongest in HE sector by 10.8 % increase (57,580) Australia competitive in HE by 7.7% increase (4,790) and FE sector by 28.6 % increase (5,049) Canada major in schools sector with 13,534 Emerging European countries
Government’s initiatives Global internship programme in HE from this year and FE since 2003 Besides, WEST began with 300 students in March 2009 WCU project (2008-2012): Recruitment of world renown scholars and researchers in new growth engines and interdisciplinary studies 52 projects of 18 universities are to receive £60.8 million this year Second phase of BK21/NURI (2006-2012): Investment in research students, research oriented universities, and international research collaborations WIE-WISE / MEISTER schools: Nurturing S&T, Engineering, Vocational Education

Research on overseas training demands in corporate sector Conducted by SK M&C in Jan to Mar 2009 Though an in-depth interview with 25 companies including 8 public corporations, 7 big enterprises, and 10 SMEs To indentify B2B opportunities in the corporate sector for UK education providers
HRD/Training programme providers in Korea On and off-line programme delivery Professional HRD/training institutions (i.e. KMA, KPC, KSA) Commercial service providers (i.e. Hunet, Credu, YBM, Maekyung) Education institutions (i.e. KDI, aSSIT)
Key success factors Local providers: Good assessment grades by Ministry of Labor Fee reimbursements through subsidies from the government Flexible and diverse courses/programmes Administrative service of a high quality Overseas providers: Course/programme evaluation/feedback Costs and duration Customised courses/programmes Inclusion of case studies on Korean companies or market
Models and examples Model 1: Helsinki MBA in LG International 19 months programme inc. 1 year in weekend class, 3 weeks in Helsinki School of Economics, and 6 months practices in work place / £17,500 per person 5 modules in partnership with aSSIT and MBA degree at graduation Example 1: University L delivers Mater programme in Finance in partnership with KDI Example 2: University N delivers on-line MBA in partnership with Maekyung

Survey for prospective students • Conducted on 107 student visitors to UK booth • 33 respondents in SKKU ‘Student Study Abroad Fair’ on 20 Mar 09 • 74 respondents in YONSEI ‘Study & Research in Europe’ on 15 May 09 • To figure out what may affect students in their decision making process given the economic situation • Questions include study destinations, reasons/motivations, level of study, subjects to study, challenges in decision making process, relations with economic downturn, Influencers, and Information sources
What’s your study destination? 1. UK 46.4% 2. European countries: 29.8% 3. US: 18.8% In addition, 32.1% have chosen both UK and US; 38.1% UK and European countries
Why have you chosen the above country? Quality of education: US/UK Language acquisition: UK Career prospect/Costs: European countries
What do you find most challenging in preparation for study abroad? For study UK students, Information on institutions should be more available Finance relatively is less challenging
How would you consider study abroad if the economy gets worse?
Who is influencing your decision? Younger age group have parents/friends as influencers *Age group: SKKU (19-21) EU Day (19-35)
Where do you get information on study abroad? On-line is the first information source but students also like to double check the information with their people
