  1. Result Area #1: Improved Data Access Presented by ThembaniMoitlhobogi 3rd June 2013, GICC, Gaborone, Botswana

  2. Outline Status of Result Area #1 • Introduction • Receiving Stations • Perspective, Status, Challenges • Delivery of 1TB Disks • Perspective, Status, Challenges • Dissemination of products via EUMETCAST • Perspective, Status, Challenges • Dissemination of products via Website/FTP • Perspective, Status, Challenges

  3. Introduction Result Area #1: Improved Data Access Objective: Ensure that users have access to near real-time and historical earth observation data Near real time data access Historical data access Receiving Stations Website 1 TB Hard Drive

  4. Receiving Stations SADC- IND2: 34 Receiving Stations are installed / upgraded and operational within the first year (= before May 2011) 10 PUMA for National Met Services (under SC = Supply Contract) 10 AMESD e-station for Ministries of Agriculture (under SC) 14 AMESD-Fire station for Ministries of Environment Perspective: National Focal points have access to Near Real Time Earth Observation data for their operational needs.

  5. Expected result SADC-IND3: • to improve access to Historical EO data in SADC region Receiving Stations PUMA Receiving Stations AMESD PUMA station in Zambia

  6. Expected result SADC-IND3: • to improve access to Historical EO data in SADC region Receiving Stations SADC-THEMA Fire Receiving Stations AMESD Fire station in Malawi AMESD Fire station in Zimbabwe (UZ)

  7. Receiving Stations AMESD E-Stations AMESD e-station in Namibia AMESD e-station in Swaziland

  8. Receiving Stations • Challenges: • Receiving stations initially installed on private networks hence not accessible to users on their local area network • Insufficient competent IT personnel to manage the stations • Insufficient use of some receiving stations mostly due to limited knowledge on how to operate the system • Power interruptions (blackouts) • Data access by regional institutes e.g. Universities not yet adequate • Recommendation: • Facilitate additional station installation in MESA • Further training IT personnel and users in institutes on how to manage the systems and make use of the data • Backup power for receiving stations? (solar panels etc)

  9. 1TB Disks SADC- IND#3a: By October 2011, 11 Institutes (Ministry of Environment) received the 1 TB disc SADC- IND#3b: By October 2011, 11 Institutes (Ministry of Agriculture) received the 1 TB disc SADC- IND#3c: By October 2011, 11 Institutes (Universities) received the 1 TB disc Perspective: National Focal Points have access to historical data for research and development.

  10. 1TB Disks Target: 33 Disks Current Status: 34 Disks delivered Challenges: Fewer universities received disks, this is due to the limited number of participating universities

  11. Dissemination via EUMETCast Dissemination via EumetCast Perspective: Users with receiving stations can have access to products in near–real time All products that are currently being produced are being automatically disseminated to EUMETCast • Most decadal products disseminated on evening of the third day following end of decade

  12. Dissemination via EUMETCast Dissemination via EumetCast Challenges: Limited number of users have receiving stations Recommendation: Facilitate additional station installation in MESA

  13. Dissemination via Website Website/FTP Perspective: Alternative method of data acquisition • The most recent data for all products that are currently being produced is available on website • Website is mostly used as a resource for recovering products which could not be received on the receiving station

  14. Dissemination via Website Website/FTP Website usage: May 2013 Challenges: • Limited bandwidth (concurrent downloads) Recommendation: • Upgrading of web-hosting facilities

  15. Recent Activities Maintenance of Receiving Stations Station • Maintenance of Fire Receiving Station at Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, Tanzania on 3rd December 2012 • Maintenance of AMESD Receiving Station at Ministry of Agriculture, Tanzania on 5th December 2012

  16. Recent Activities Maintenance of Receiving Stations Station • Maintenance of AMESD Receiving Station at Ministry of Agriculture, Mozambique on 1st April 2013 • Maintenance of AMESD Receiving Station at University of Swaziland on 5th April 2013

  17. Recent Activities System Administration Training • AMESD System Administration Training, Gaborone, Botswana, 14 – 16 January 2013 • AMESD Fire Station Administration Training, University of Botswana, 18 February 2013
