NOW LET’S TALK ABOUT VERBS! • THE INFINITIVE – WHAT IS IT? • It is the BASIC FORM of the verb. • The infinitiveis often identified in Englishby the word “to” preceding it. • The LARGESTgroupofFrench infinitives are those that END in “er.” • When verbs are in a group(like the “er” verbs) they ALL conjugate with the SAMEendings!
CONJUGATING Where do I begin? STEM • When conjugating a “regular” verb (ex: aimer) you MUST… • Dropthe ending (“er”) -- aimer • Take the new stem (part of the verb without the “er” ending) and add the appropriate ending for the subject.
Completing the puzzle • For regular verbs, it is VERYimportant to know which endings match with which subjects. • For les verbes « er » the endings are… • Je (e) Nous (ons) • Tu (es) Vous (ez) • Il/Elle (e) Ils/Elles (ent)
THE PRONOUNS AND THEIR ENDINGS • ALL REGULAR–er verbs, • the singular subject pattern is: • Aimer = Aimer = aim • Je – STEM + eJ’aime • Tu – STEM + esTuaimes • Il – STEM + eIlaime • Elle – STEM + eElleaime
THE PRONOUNS AND THEIR ENDINGS • For ALL REGULAR–er verbs, the plural subject pattern is: • Aimer = aimer = Aim • Nous – STEM + onsNousaimons • Vous – STEM + ezVousaimez • Ils – STEM + entIlsaiment • Elles – STEM + entEllesaiment
AND ONE MORE… AIMER(to like) Drop the –er ending The STEM is aim J’aime Nous aimons TuaimesVousaimez Il aimeIlsaiment Elle aimeEllesaiment
Starfollah! What does it mean? I like I am liking I do like In English there are “trois” ways to speak in the present. In French, there is “UN!” J’aime
Your getting the hang of it? _____ aime _____ aimez _____ aiment _____ aimes _____ aimons _____ aime
