Work / Life Balance (WLB) • What does WLB mean to you? • Defined: The equilibrium between the amount of time and effort somebody devotes to work and that given to other aspects of life.
Work / Life Conflict (WLC) • What is it? • Upward Trend
Causes of upward trend in WLC • Recession • Inflation – rising cost of basic needs • Two full time working parents • Generational Differences • X & Y Theory (higher expectation due to universal satisfaction of basic needs)
Why should employers and thus HRD professionals be concerned about WLC? • Employees Satisfaction and Happiness • Retention / Cost of re-hiring • Talent Loss • Attract employees from a smaller labor pool as Boomers retire • Aggregate affect on bottom line • Results ( Stress and all of it’s manifestations, physical and emotional)
Addressing WLC • Creation of WLB – How? • FFPs or EFPs • What are your employers doing? • What would you like like them to be doing?
job sharing generous personal and family leave expanded health coverage eldercare benefits savings plans wellness resource telecommuting Employee Friendly Policies • on-site child care • flexible hours / schedules • compressed work weeks • gym memberships reimbursements • laundry services • compensation for cell phones • mileage compensation
Telecommuting • Rapid growth.. Estimated employed workers who telecommute: • 2006: 28.7 m at least once per month, 22 m at least one day a week • 2008, over 33 m at least once per month, 24 m at least one day per week (WorldatWork Telework Trendlines 2009 Survey Report)
Group Activity • Two Groups – Employers and Employees • Identify and discuss the pros and cons of telecommuting • Pros and Cons for Employers and Employess • How do we, as HRD profs, mitigate the cons. (assumption – you’ve decided you want this in your organization)
Telecommuting • Does not lend itself to every job • Must do your research (successful examples) • Buy in at all levels • Must have thorough and fair policy • Manager-employee trusting relationship is critical
