  1. Which Subgroup suffers the most from poverty in old age (65)? Allie Jardin

  2. Previous Research • Focus on factors such as marital status and number of years individuals participated in the workforce. • Women are more likely to experience poverty than men.

  3. GSS Data • General Social Survey had useful data on all variables I wanted to use. • WRKYEARS, FAMGEN, CHILDS, MARITIAL, BLACK, POVLINE etc. • By adding a selection filter Sex(2), age(65-100), I significantly decreased my sample size.

  4. Findings • Cross-tabs • Female 15.9% of sample was poor. • With selection filter sex(2), age(65-100) • Black 39.8% • Yearsworked, hardly any (0-9) 30.9% • Marital, 19.9% widowed & 30.4% separated • Hkids, 29.0% with many (5-8) • FamGen, 38.0% with 2 generation in household.

  5. Surprising • Although all tests run with cross-tabs proved to be statistically significant the multivariate regression did not yield the same results. • Only variable that was statistically significant was black.

  6. Take Away Lesson • Institutional racism needs to end. • Save $$$$$$$
