What is PostSecret? • a website where people can post their secrets in an artistic fashion. • Although “secrets” shared in today’s class are school appropriate, please keep in mind that this is a public website. • Some of the “secrets” you may see on the website may contain adult content and mature issues. [Make sure you check with a parent before viewing.]

  3. Why are we practicing with PostSecret? Sometimes it can be difficulty to practice characterization with people we have read and discussed in class. Since posts on this website are anonymous, it allows us the opportunity to characterize the owners of these “secrets” in an indirect way based on their actions, words, thoughts, feelings, etc.

What are the types of conflict? • Man vs. Self Conflict: When a character is in a conflict with his/herself • Man vs. Nature Conflict:When a character is in a conflict with the natural world. • Man vs. Society Conflict:When a character is involved in a conflict with society. • Man vs. Man Conflict: When two people are in a conflict with each other

  12. Character Terms: Protagonist: The main character. Antagonist: The person(s) against the protagonist.

  13. Who is the… Protagonist? Antagonist?

  14. Protagonist: The environmentally aware person that drives a hybrid car. How do I know? Because his/her car is the main focus. Antagonist: People who do not drive hybrid cars How do I know? People without hybrid cars are destroying the environment in this person’s eyes.

  16. Types of Characters • Static Character: A person who does not change. • Dynamic Character: A person who changes.

  17. Types of Characters • Flat Characters: One dimensional, superficial, and stereotypical. • Round Characters: Many sides, conflicted, more like real people.

  21. What is character motivation? Character Motivation is the reason characters do the things they do or act the way that they act.

  24. Characterization: • Direct Characterization:When we are told traits or characteristics about a character without having to infer. • Indirect characterization:When hints to a character’s traits are given, but the reader has to infer specific characteristics about him/her.

  26. Write a Secret! • Pick any character from “The Possibility of Evil” or “Shoofly Pie.” • Write a secret from his/her perspective. • You may be creative! Here are some characters you could pick from: • The Possibility of Evil: • Mr. Lewis (grocer) • Martha Harper (woman in grocery store) • Miss Strangeworth (main character) • Helen Crane (mother of baby) • Dave/Linda (young couple) • Shoofly Pie: • Mattie (main character) • Johnny (chef) • Riyad (boss) • Auggie (dishwasher)
