What is Scratch? A program is a recipe telling the computer what to do Without a program, the computer does absolutely nothing. A program must tell the computer exactly what to do. Computer programs are also called software or apps. Programs are like food recipes, which tell the cook how to make a particular kind of food. Often, things we do follow a regular pattern, a bit like a program. Programs for computers are written by people, either as a job or as a hobby. Computer programs must be written in a language that the computer can understand. Some common programming languages are Java, Basic, Python and C++. To use these, you need a lot of training. Scratch is a programming language that is easy to learn. Programming is useful, creative and fun Do you have an idea for a computer game? Or a fun animation? Do you need a custom program for a particular task? Then you need to write a program yourself. Look at all the programs that exist already, and you see that programming is a creative activity.
