What are Allergies • Allergies are the single most common cause of chronic health problems among young children. • Allergies are abnormal immune system reactions to things that are typically harmless to most people.
What Things Are People Are Allergic to? • Foods • Insect bits and stings • Airborne particles • Medicines • Chemicals
Signs and Symptoms • Frequent colds and ear infections • Headaches • Frequent nose bleeds • Unexplained stomachaches • Hives, eczema, or other skin rashes • Mottles tongue • Lack of energy, restlessness, • Red, itchy eyes • Reactions to foods or medications • Chronic congestion • Runny nose, cough, or throat clearing
symptoms most commonly occur • Ingestants- causes digestive upsets and respiratory problems • Inhalants-affect the respiratory system causing a runny nose, cough, wheezing, and itchy watery eyes. • Contactants- cause skin irritations, rashes, hives, and eczema. • Injectables- trigger respiratory, digestive, and/or skin disturbance.
Management/Medications • At the present, there are no known cures for allergies • Medications such as pills or nasal sprays are often used to treat allergies. • Shots • Epinephrine, a fast-acting medicine that can help offset an anaphylactic reaction • allergen immunotherapy, by receiving injections of small amounts of an allergen, your body can gradually develop antibodies and undergo other immune system changes that help reduce the reaction to that allergen. • Symptoms and complications of allergies are generally less severe and easier to control if they are identified • Limit the Childs exposure to the things they are allergic too. • Make efforts to avoid allergens
As a teacher, I would address this in my classroom by always paying attention and learning about the medications and conditions of allergies that the children have. Teachers, should always get approval from the child’s doctor and family before giving treatments and medications to them.
