  1. Introduction to the full text SciELO Methodology Mariana Rocha BIOJONE Manager, SciELO Unity BIREME/PAHO/WHO CRICS V, Havana, April 25-27, 2001

  2. Program • SciELO Model • SciELO Methodology - general aspects • SciELO Methodology - specific aspects • SciELO Methodology and its application • Conclusions

  3. SciELO Model

  4. SciELO Scientific Electronic Library Online electronic publishing model for scientific journals in the Internet

  5. Development of the SciELO Model SciELO Project - Partnership & Phases Phase 1 - Pilot project: March 1997- May 1998 development of SciELO Methodology pilot operation of 10 journals in the Internet Phase 2 - SciELO Model: June 1998 - May 2001 operation of SciELO sites widening partnership development of a network of SciELO sites adaptation to other types of documents

  6. Why should the SciELO Model be developed? accesss to full text of health journals from the LILACS database difficulty to retrieve scientific production from developing countries need of a methodology to promote the transition to electronic publishing predominance of the Internet as an universal publishing medium

  7. Global objective To contribute to the development of national scientific research, by enhancing and widening the mediums for dissemination, publishing and evaluation of its results

  8. Specific objectives Development of a methodology for preparation, storage, dissemination and evaluation of scientific electronic publications, through advanced information technology resources Implementation and operation of SciELO sites: national, sub-regional, regional and thematic A network of SciELO sites in Latin America and in the Caribbean countries

  9. The SciELO Model 1. SciELO Methodology 2. SciELO sites 3. Cooperation agreements

  10. 1. SciELO Methodology allows the electronic publication of integrated versions of scientific journals, the organization of bibliographic and full text databases, the preservation of electronic archives, and the production of statistical indicators of usage and impact on scientific literature

  11. 2. SciELO sites Management of electronic journal collections in the Internet in Latin America and in the Caribbean countries Partnerships to build national libraries of electronic scientific journals Brazil: 56 titles Chile: 20 titles Cuba: 5 health titles Public Health: 5 titles from different countries Pilot operation of the Costa Rica site In implementation: Colombia, Spain and Uruguai

  12. SciELO portal Access to SciELO sites collection http://www.scielo.org

  13. 3. cooperation agreements agreements between the actors of scientific communication - authors, editors, science and technology institutions, … - for the dissemination of the SciELO Model

  14. SciELO Methodology general aspects

  15. SciELO Methodology: composition Set of standards, guidelines, manuals and software: Preparation of scientific journal texts in electronic format Storage in full text database Publication in the Internet and/or in other media Usage and bibliometric indicators reports Electronic journals preservation

  16. SciELO Methodology: development principles Compliance to national and international standards Sinchronization with international advances and experiences in the field of electronic publications Intensive uses of adequate information technology for Latin America and for the Caribbean countries

  17. Access assured to both paper and electronic collections Adoption of the methodology made easy for publishers National and international decentralization/centralization Evaluation compatible to national/international practices

  18. SciELO Methodology: criteria for admission and permanence of scientific journals Scientific content: the publishing, predominantly, of the results of original scientific research, and other original works, which contribute significantly to knowledge in the area Peer review: approval of submitted contributions must be performed by peers, and journals should expressly specify the peer review process applied for the approval of contributions

  19. Editorial board: its constitution must be public - its members should be renowned national and foreign specialists Frequency: depends on the journal subject area Lifetime: must have already published at least four issues

  20. Timeliness of publication:must be published on time according to its determined frequency Article titles, abstracts and keywords in English:journal articles must provide English translations of titles, abstracts and keywords, in case English is not the original language of the article Standardization: the journal must specify which standards it follows for editorial presentation of periodicals and articles, as well as for document presentations

  21. SciELO Methodology: modules DTD Module - languages for the description of journal texts for computer processing Markup Module- text preparation/edition according to DTD specifications Converter Module - text organization and standartization of bibliographic elements

  22. Report module- bibliometric indicators and usage reports Interface module - operation/publication of the data bases in the Internet and/or in CD-ROM, DVD-ROM

  23. 1 DTD Module Markup Module Converter Module Texts 2 3 Database Report Module 5 4 Interface Module CD-ROM Internet

  24. Any questions ?

  25. SciELO Methodology specific aspects

  26. SciELO Methodology: modules DTD Module - languages for the description of journal texts for computer processing Markup Module- text preparation/edition according to DTD specifications Converter Module - text organization and standardization of bibliographic elements

  27. Report module- bibliometric indicators and usage reports Interface module - operation/publication of the data bases in the Internet and/or in CD-ROM, DVD-ROM

  28. DTD Module

  29. Based on the international standard SGML - Standard Generalized Markup Language - ISO 8879:1986 Standard used for the description of full texts, in which the markup is independent from hardware and software SGML is a metalanguage which makes the construction of other languages like DTDs possible

  30. DTD Document Type Definition It contains the rules that describe the structure of an electronic document It specifies: • elements allowed in a document • the structure of the document • the attributes with their values and standards

  31. The SciELO DTDs Compatible with international DTDs like ISO12083, MAJOUR and Elsevier The bibliographic elements follow national and international standards like AACR2, ISO, ABNT, LILACS and ISSN It complies the criteria adopted by existing journals and allow their compatibility with international standards

  32. Group of 4 DTDs : SciELO Serial DTD describes the issue of a journal, and contains elements like the issue title, the editor’s issue, the cover, and others SciELO Article DTD describes a scientific article

  33. SciELO Text DTD describes texts that are not scientific articles like editorial, letters, and others HTML DTD describes the texts for presentation and operation in the WWW service in the Internet

  34. SciELO Serial DTD Contains three main groups: serfront contains the elements that describe the journal cover, the title, the alternate title, information on the publication and the summary serbody contains the scientific articles and texts in an issue serback contains complementary information like glossaries

  35. SciELO Article DTD contains three main groups and the attributes of the first element, the article, that identify it in the issue front contains three main groups that identify: the title group (title and subtitle); the author group (author and/or coorporate author); and the bibliographic complementary elements (abstract, keywords, information about conference, reports, theses and the history of the article)

  36. body contains the full text of the article in HTML back contains two main groups: bibliographic complementary elements and bibliographic references, which could be marked up in four different formats: Vancouver, ISO 690/87, ABNT 6023/89 and one whitout any format
