Electronic Laboratory Management David Pfeil – VP Informatics & Healthcare Technology - Laboratory Corporation of America Pfeild@labcorp.com
Define Electronic Labs • Front end data collection systems • Order entry interactions • Results delivery to providers • Results data utilization by plans, employers, and third parties
Front End Laboratory Systems • Moving to all ASP model – removes costs and Stark issues • Well formed order including eligibility checking on the front end – directs test to proper vendor and improve reporting efficiencies • Evidence-based testing reminders
Higher Front End Intelligence • Use previous claims, meds and labs to direct future diagnostics/care of patient • Increase compliance with testing • Potentially reduce redundant testing • Wrap physician pay for performance around compliance with clinical messaging
Back End Reporting • Encounter data in ANSI 837 format fairly standard • Results non-standard but driving towards HL7 • Access to eligibility a must • IPA and employer indexing important
Common Data Result Requests • Identify populations based on result range, LOINC, CPT and/or diagnosis codes • Monitor a specific patient’s progress by querying by patient name or member ID • Evaluate MCO and/or physician utilization by selecting MCO product line or physician demographics, such as address, name, and UPIN.
Select the exact criteria you need, including analyte, date range and payer account. Include patient name, member ID, or gender to narrow the search.
The “Advance Query” option provides additional drill down criteria. Evaluate physician utilization by selecting physician name, city, state, ZIP, or UPIN.
Identify and manage chronic populations based on result range, and/or diagnosis codes.
Customize output by selecting specific columns to view and/or download.
View data online or download data into a comma-delimited text file. The data can be imported into a spreadsheet or database application for further manipulation and report functionality.
Multi Lab Vendor Headache • Master Patient Indexing • CPT vs LOINC coding of analytes • Physician pass-through • Hospital send-out • POLs • Hospital outreach
Lab Data and Health Plans • Case management • Disease management • Employer wellness programs • Predictive modeling • Payor based health records • Participation in RHIO structures
Future of Labs • Plans requiring delivery of all labs to their data repositories • Deliver data in near real time (eligibility required in real time) • LabHub like RxHub
