  3. Introduction • We use tens of thousands of chemicals every day • chemicals are important to having a good life • Important to national economy • BUT chemicals can be bad for humans and environment

  4. Sources of chemicalpollution • Domestic sewage • Industrial discharges • Seepage from waste sites • Atmospheric fallout • Domestic run-off • Accidents and spills at sea • Operational discharges from oil rigs • Mining discharges • Agricultural run-off

  5. The effect of chemical pollution 1 • neurological toxins harm a child’s nervous system • Developmental toxins affect the development a fetus • Fetus structural or functional abnormalities • Retardation • death

  6. 2 The effect of chemicalpollution--lead • Enter system through food, water and air • associated with obvious and serious clinical problems • millions of American children have elevated blood lead levels • millions children’s blood lead levels greater than 0.72 mmol/L.

  8. What can we do to prevent chemical pollution? • Try and buy organic produce, this has not been treated with chemicals

  9. What can we do to prevent chemical pollution? • Try and reduce the amount of chemicals used in the home, such as fly sprays, detergents and weed killers

  10. What can we do to prevent chemical pollution? • Try and avoid plastic packaging, when incinerated it releases harmful chemicals
