CCSS Mathematics, science, and technical subjects A path to implementation
Students Who are College and Career Ready: • Demonstrate independence, • Build content knowledge, • Respond to demands of audience, task, purpose, and discipline, • Comprehend and critique, • Value evidence, • Use technology and digital media, and • Come to understand other perspectives and cultures. CCSS, page 7
What are Common Core State Standards for Mathematics, Science, and technical subjects • What do you know? • What do you need to know? • How can I help you? • How can you help each other? • Where can you find the answers?
Common Core State Standards for Math and Literacy (CCSS) • Access the CCSS for Math and Literacy, implementation plan, and related information on the ADE website at • http://www.arkansased.org/divisions/learning-services/curriculum-and-instruction/resource-materials-for-lesson-plans
Literacy CCSS include science and technical subjects reading and writing standards and do not replace current content standards.
What They Are • Modeling and scaffolding what reading in your subject area looks and sounds like • Teaching students what is important/vital information in your discipline
Arkansas Science Curriculum Frameworks • Access on the ADE website at http://www.arkansased.org/divisions/learning-services/curriculum-and-instruction/frameworks/curriculum_categories/science • Revision scheduled for 2011 was postponed. • Required to be taught by all Arkansas school districts until new science standards are adopted by the Arkansas State Board of Education. • Grades 5 and 7 Benchmark and EOC Biology assessments aligned to the current Arkansas Science Curriculum Frameworks remain in place.
The Vision of the Framework: • “Students, over multiple years of school, actively engage in science and engineering practices and apply crosscutting concepts to deepen their understanding of the core ideas in these fields.”
A Framework for K-12 Science Education; Practices, Crosscutting Concepts, and Core Ideas • Guiding research document for the development of science content standards. • Released by the National Research Council (NRC) in July 2011 and available as a free PDF at http://www.nap.edu/catalog.php?record_id=13165.
NRC Framework recommends that science education in grades K-12 be built around these three dimensions: • Scientific and engineering practices • Crosscutting concepts that unify the study of science and engineering • Core ideas in science
Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) • Arkansas is one of 26 lead states working in partnership with the National Research Council, the National Science Teachers Association, the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Achieve to develop the NGSS. • More information on the development process can be found at http://www.nextgenscience.org/ or http://arkansasngss.pbworks.com/.
Sign up at this site to receive email alerts during the development process. • The second public draft of the NGSS is expected in Fall 2012, and the final standards will be released by Achieve in early 2013. • http://www.nextgenscience.org/
8 Standards for Mathematical Practice • What are the 8 Standards for Mathematical Practice and where can you find them? • Discuss briefly your understanding of each of the Standards for Mathematical Practice by considering these items – • What does this standard mean? • What does it look like when students are engaged in this standard? • What can a teacher do to model or encourage students to engage in this standard? • Why is this standard important?
Big Shifts • What are the big shifts at your grade level in what is taught in mathematics? • Where can you find out?
COMMON CORE STATE STANDARDS IMPLEMENTATION INSTITUTES The Arkansas Department of Education, in partnership with AETN/Arkansas IDEAS, provided four institutes focused on strategic planning for implementation, assessment literacy, formative assessment, and learning progressions. The institutes are archived. Access: http://ideas.aetn.org/commoncore/institutes

Using “Crosswalks” • •Many of the concepts you are already teaching are contained in the CCSS • •Determine which concepts you can carry forward to your new (CCSS-based) curriculum • http://ccssarkansas.pbworks.com/w/page/32131061/CCSS%20Arkansas--Crosswalk%20Page
Identify What Your Former Standards Do NotCover • •The crosswalk serves two purposes • –Carry forward the concepts you are already teaching • –Discover new concepts you need to add to your curriculum or which ones you can delete. • •Once you figure out what you need to add or delete, make note of it on your new curriculum map
Inventory Your Resources • •Do you have the resources you need to teach your new curriculum? • •Can you teach your subject’s standards using the resources you already have? • •Is it possible to purchase the resources you need? • •Are resources available online?
Scope & Sequence • •Does it matter what order you teach the new standards? • •It’s math…you better believe it! • •Put the new standards in the correct order in your new Scope & Sequence
Domains That Appear Multiple Times in the Elementary Standards • •Operations & Algebraic Thinking • •Number & Operations in Base Ten • –Fractions • •Measurement & Data • •Geometry
Middle School Domains (6-8) • •Ratios & Proportional Relationships (6th & 7th) • •The Number System • •Expressions & Equations • •Geometry • •Statistics & Probability • Functions (Grade 8)
High School courses • Current frameworks - 2012-2013 • New courses/course codes for 2013-14 • CCSS required grades 9-12 in 2013-14 • PARCC assessment system is scheduled to come online in 2014-15
Algebra I should be taught using current frameworks this year. • New textbooks for 2013-14 school year (grades 9-12 caravan in the spring)
LDC/MDC • Designed to make literacy (math) instruction the foundation of the core subjects • Teachers leading the development • Supported by Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation • LDC/MDC is the high school training for Common Core in AR • http://www.literacydesigncollaborative.org/
